It Had To Be Snakes

On a walk with my neighbor, we counted over a dozen baby snakes all over the road. Dead. Talk about depressing! The sight was reminiscent of a warm spring day after a shower where you'd expect to see earth worms all over the pavement. They all had come out to bask in the sun and move about in the warm 60 degrees before the cold weather sets in. We saw two live babies in the woods on trails, and I gently scooted them off to safety. Unfortunately, a beautiful smooth green snake we found was half dead. Thankfully, this little hognose snake did not get run over when earlier, I pulled our van into the driveway! --LKR

He's so cute! And he's all puffed up! So that big one you found in your yard must have been the mama! How many babies do they have?

Isn't he? I've never seen so many snakes before in our neighborhood 'til this summer!
Yes, I believe it was probably a female and mom to about 10 to 30 (some places say up to 60 !!!) babies. They lay the eggs in June/July, then crawl away. The eggs hatch in about 60 days. The hog nose snakes can live up to about 12 years, but many sadly never make it that age--too many dangers and predators. :-(

Awesome! So you may have several of these in your yard in the summer. I hope there is enough food for them all!

LOL I hope so, too--that we have several in our yard and that we have enough food for them all! I'm sure they'll slither away into other yards as food becomes scarce. Just hope they go after crickets and spiders rather than my little froggies!!!
